What to buy at Dollar Stores

Do you ever wonder what is really a deal at dollar stores and what's just junk? Here's a list of my favorite things to pick up inexpensively at the dollar store and some tips for what to avoid.

1. STORAGE BINS & BASKETS

Get yourself organized with a bin or basket to fit any space.

2. SCRUB BRUSHES

Don't pay $5 or more at Home Improvement or Big Box stores. Pick up a brush for scrubbing your bathroom, dishes, or carpets for just $1.

3. OFFICE SUPPLIES

Before you drop big bucks at Office Supply stores run to the Dollar Tree for pens, staplers, tape dispensers, folders, notepads, and more. Whether it's back to school or just time for getting your home office outfitted, you'll be glad you shopped smart.

4. KIDS CRAFTS

New craft items come out for every season/holiday and complete craft kits for $1 can't be beat! Also stock up on craft essentials like paint, clothespins, beads, glitter, yarn, and more.

5. SEASONAL DECORATIONS

From Christmas ornaments to spooky Halloween decorations you can find adornments for your home to celebrate any occasion all year round. Put them up individually or combine in wreaths, garlands, and centerpieces to wow your guests for less than a cup of coffee.

6. GREETING CARDS

A single greeting card can run $5-7 at major retailers while most are 2 for $1 at the dollar store! At those prices I stock up and keep them on hand for birthdays, bereavements, and every occasion.

7. SILK FLOWERS

Dollar stores have an ever changing assortment of silk flowers that can be made into wreaths, centerpieces, and arrangements that will never fade or die. Pick up a wreath form, floral foam, and ribbon while you're there to complete your project.

8. PET SUPPLIES

Pick up bowls, collars, leashes, litterbox, treat containers and more for your furry friends. Just be sure to leave behind the treats, food, and rawhide items which are often made in China and not healthy for your pets. Be wary of toys which are easily destroyed and ingested.

9. CALENDARS

When the new year is coming grab yourself a bargain calendar or planner at a fraction of the price you'll find them elsewhere.

10. GARAGE SALE SUPPLIES

When it's time to declutter don't spend big bucks on stickers and signs. Keep more of your yard sale earnings in your pocket by shopping dollar stores for supplies.
