Weighted Blanket - A Love Story


If you're not living under a rock then you've probably become aware of the weighted blanket craze. They were everywhere at Christmas and are advertised all over as a cure for everything from restless leg to autism. There are few real scientific studies to show what if any conditions they improve but the testimonials are positive for many ailments.


I've always liked many layers of blankets for some weight on me when I sleep even in the summertime. I was curious about weighted blankets and put one on my Christmas list in 2018. My amazing sister-in-law saw how expensive it was and decided to sew a blanket for me instead. The result was the best gift EVER. I suffer from anxiety, fibromyalgia, and insomnia. Sleep is often my number one complaint at the doctor's office. This blanket works miracles. It calms my nerves, dulls my pain, and makes me feel safely cocooned and able to sleep deeply. I am not a doctor and I can't tell you that this is a proven therapy of any kind, but the results for me have been game-changing.


These miracle blankets can be purchased in a variety of fabrics and weights. I now have one for the summer months that is lighter and cooler to go with my fantastic homemade winter blanket. The common wisdom is that the blanket should be no more than 10% of your body weight but I also wouldn't go above 20lbs. The blankets are washable (fine in my top loader with an agitator) but you can also find duvet covers so that you can reduce washing the heavy blankets. Whatever your sleep problems maybe, I think a weighted blanket is well worth trying.
